I was a very lucky guy, when I left school, as I knew from that minute that I wanted to start my career in the family business, Holbrook Meat. I didn't fully understand what 'starting at the bottom' really meant until I was given a scrubbing brush and a bucket. Fortunately I moved on and occupied many roles giving me a sound understanding in the areas of Hospitality, Food, Materials handling, Administration and Export.
Holbrook Meat floated on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1985. The transformation was successful and my father retired.
In 1987 I left Holco to start my own trading company, which quickly grew into a large and also very successful Foodservice Distribution company. I was lucky to have the help of my two brothers Paul & Richard though most of those years. This company was known as Regency Food Services P/L & operated from Regency Park in South Australia. In 1998 we employed 60 staff and had a turnover of $45m
Regency won many industry awards for its innovation and spectacular growth, including Telstra/SA Govt. Business of the year in 1996 and National Food Service Distributor 1998. In 1999, I sold the business on the third offer to multinational food distribution company, Bidvest Plc. Bidvest still operate the business today.
In 2001, after a term under contract to Bidvest, I bought into Options Wine Merchants Pty Ltd (then owned entirely by Deb Kingsbury). The business appealed to me because of its close similarities to the Foodservice industry. Options had many familiar Customers and the service and logistics requirements where exactly the same as Regency.
The wine industry and the trading environment is changing rapidly with dominant customers now owning most liquor licenses. My goal is to take Options to another level and add value for business partners through innovative sales strategies.
