Notes Nigl Gruner Veltliner 'Kremser Freihiet' 2011

The combination of loess soils and a climate of hot days and cold nights result in grapes in the Senftenberg part of the Kremstal region which can develop great sugars while retaining their structure and acidity. The wide range of minerals in loess deposits also tends to strong, complexing and firming elements - before the actual fruit characters even kick in. Martin Nigl coaxes out of his older (15-25 years) low yielding and early-picked vines, for the 'Freiheit' selection, enormous, varietal characters and incredible juicy fruit flavours, but at a lean and tightly wound 12o, rather than the possible 14o. That is, he still achieves dazzling purity and piercing varietal signature, but with extreme elegance. Maybe he is a bit modest when insisting it is all in the vineyard? An exceptional year for whites, as in much of northern Europe, helps.
The magic and allure of Gruner Veltliner, with all this potentially daunting tightness and acidity, is that 'Freiheit' is just such a juicy and delicious wine, with aromas and flavours of grapefruit/lemon, flowers, mineral, Gruner's characteristic pepper or chilli note, and some juicy, almost tropical melon. This combo allows it to adapt easily to a remarkable array of foods.
