In 1889 Amos William Howard discovered subterranean clover growing naturally in the Adelaide Hills. Triggering a major contribution to the increase in pasture productivity, the seeding of 'Howard' and 'Mt. Barker' clovers became widespread throughout rural Australia. A thriving clover seed industry continues to this day.

Howard Vineyard and Cellar Door now occupy the site of his discovery.

Established in the late 1990's, Howard Vineyard owns two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. The Schoenthal Vineyard, consisting of 36 hectares nearLobethal, provides an excellent site for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The elevation of 440-500 metres ensures a cool autumn for the ideal ripening of these varieties.

The Howard Vineyard of 24 hectares lies between Nairne, Littlehampton and Mt Barker. With an elevation of 360-400 metres, it provides consistent quality white wine grapes, while the slightly warmer aspect also suits Semillon, Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Howard Vineyard wine brand was established in 2005 and the Cellar Door opened in November 2006. Winemaking is carriedout by Michael Sykes with Peter Leske and Mark Swann providing additional oenological advice.
